In Roud’s work, nature is never a "nature morte": it is always composed. Nature enables the staging of a daily life that is poetic and emotional. Flowers were given considerable significance (we know that Roud had a project, with Mermod, to publish an illustrated plant encyclopedia). Their perfection manifests the beauty on Earth. Flowers, in an interior setting, are combined with various farmer portraits, with objects and with books. A table composed in this way takes on an autobiographical and solemn tone. At the same time, these images are inscribed in another genre – the still life – which inspires experimentation. Roud professionally tested the possibilities of the medium: the variety of textures, the effects of lights, the quality of colors—that which is evident and that which the poet dreams to seize with his words.
